The Importance of Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

If you have a menstrual cycle, you’re functioning on a rhythm that controls everything, whether you’re conscious of it or not.

Everything in our society treats women’s hormones as though we are irrational and unpredictable. We’re taught that our periods make us overly emotional, that these changes in behavior are always negative.

But what if I told you that wasn’t true at all?

In fact, these hormone fluctuations actually follow a consistent pattern every month and are easily predictable once you understand this pattern.

Our menstrual cycles are predictable, and you can map out the pattern of yourself each month once you know what to expect.

After tracking every aspect of my daily experiences, from emotions and food cravings to exercise and libido, I could clearly see the pattern that all of these areas of my life follow.

I can now predict how I will feel on each day of the month.

For example, I know that the first two days of my period, I’ll feel lethargic and have major food cravings.

I know that by day 3, my energy will come back. By days 4-6, I’m back to doing intense workouts, and my libido is rising.

By the start of my follicular phase, I have the energy to do hard workouts daily, my food cravings are gone and I’m eating less overall, and my libido is at its highest levels of the month.

I know these feelings will last until about halfway through my ovulatory phase, and then everything will slowly start to drop.

By mid-luteal phase, I won’t have the energy levels to workout at all (maybe a walk here and there), I’ll be eating everything in sight, and my husband’s jokes will not land like they usually do (I’ll be crying at everything).

You can’t change these things, it’s just how your body functions, but you can use this information to optimize your life.

I know when I’ll be the most social and therefore when it’s the best time to try new things and be more active. I know when I’ll be highly sensitive and exhausted, and can tell my husband to take extra care around me and plan for some movie nights on the couch that week.

This is not a quick fix.

It takes time and dedication to study yourself, to collect the data over multiple months to uncover the recurring patterns you’re experiencing. But once you have “you” mapped out, real transformation can occur in all aspects of your life.

You can heal your relationship with yourself and have a much deeper connection with others. Your love life will transform when your partner has a better understanding of what’s going on with you under the surface as well.

To get started, you can download my quick guide to the phases here.

This will provide a summary of each phase’s characteristics and easy things you can implement each week. My in-depth tracker to help you dive deep into your own unique rhythm is coming soon, so stay tuned!
